The Town of South Thomaston is in the process of receiving a substantial 50% matching Land and Water Conservation Grant of $17,000 from the Maine Bureau of Parks and Recreation. The grant will be used to resurface and improve access to the two tennis courts and basketball court located behind the Town Office on Spruce Head Road.
At the Town meeting in June 2020, the citizens of South Thomaston approved spending $10,000 in Town funds for the project. Due to increased costs and State ADA requirements, the project now will cost a total of $34,000. The Town now needs to raise the final $7,000 to match the State grant. The Town hopes to raise these funds through donations and in-kind material, labor or equipment contributions from individuals and organizations.
The courts were built in the 1970’s and were used extensively through the 1990’s, mostly by athletic townspeople and residents of neighboring towns. The courts have fallen into disrepair over the past 20 years. There have been requests recently from Townspeople to repair and upgrade the courts for the use of both full-time residents and seasonal visitors.
The Town has already received $725 in checks and pledges towards the needed funds.
