The Assessors for the Town are the elected members of the Select Board. A municipal Assessor performs a few roles within Town government. First, they assess and assign values to individual properties within the Town. This value is the basis of how property taxes are committed, being unique to each parcel of property. The Assessor can also abate property taxes if the value assigned to the unique parcel is proven to not be accurate. The Assessor is the individual who also “commits the taxes”, setting the mill rate by combining the assessments approved by the County and School Districts, that the municipality is member to, with the municipal assessment. The “mill rate” is the amount, per $1,000 of property valuation, needed to fund the combine approved budgets of the County, School and Town.

South Thomaston has their municipal assessing services provided by Kevin McCormick making him the Town’s Assessors Agent.
